An elder monk was sweeping the monastery courtyard on a cloudless summer afternoon. A young novice monk was passing by. He asked, "How old are you?" "I'm seventy-seven.," said the elderly monk. "You're so old! Why are you still working so hard here?" inquired the novice. "Well," came the reply, "because I'm here." The young man continued, "But why are you working under this scorching sun?" The senior monk said, "Because the sun is here."

Suggestions for Reflection

(1) What does each of the above stories say to you?

(2) Do you need a conscious justification for all you do?

(3) Have you had times when you were so entirely in the moment you felt no need to have a reason or goal for your action? What was that like for you?
